KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — What better way to celebrate the reopening of Cherokee Caverns than with a showing of The Goonies?
The cave, known for special events at Halloween and Christmas, was heavily damaged by flooding back in February, with more than five feet of water wiping out paths and damaging the electrical system.
Cave conservationist Michael Whidby said according to family records dating back to the 1800s, the cave had never flooded like that.
"We just couldn't believe it," he said. "We got the kayaks out and check out all the damage."
But after several months of hard work by the family and volunteers, the cave is ready once again for visitors.
They are inviting folks to come do some cave exploring and watch The Goonies this weekend!
"It's just great seeing them enjoy family time underground in the most unique place in Knoxville to see a movie," he said.
The cave is located at 8524 Oak Ridge Highway. It's 58 degrees inside the cave all year round, so dress appropriately!
