Knoxville's annual 'Tour de Lights' holiday bike ride returning on Dec. 14

Bicyclists are invited to dress up and grab their bikes for Knoxville's annual holiday ride.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A Knoxville tradition that usually sees Santa and elves touring the city on bright bicycles is returning this year — the Tour de Lights.

During the annual holiday bike ride, riders are encouraged to dress up in festive costumes. Many wrap their bicycles with lights, and some show up in red suits or long, white beards. This year, organizers said there is a costume contest where participants can show off their creativity. People who register for the event will also have a chance to win a mountain bike.

The fun starts at 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 14 with a holiday market and expo at Mary Costa Plaza. Santa Claus will be there taking photos, along with vendors and seasonal treats. Judging for the costume contest will start at 4:15 p.m. with three categories — most creative bike, best-themed group and most festive helmet. The winners will be announced at 7:30 p.m.

At 5:30 p.m. the ride begins at Howard Baker Avenue. Anyone who wants to participate in the ride, and wants a chance at winning a mountain bike, will need to register online. Registration is free and can be done online.

A few minutes later, people will also be able to enjoy performances on the holiday stage.

At 7:15 p.m., the mountain bike giveaway drawing will begin. The Appalachian Mountain Bike Club is supplying it and to enter, people need to register either as an individual or a group. Each registration, regardless of whether it's an individual or a group, will count as a single entry.

Visit Knoxville and Bike Walk Knoxville worked together to organize the event. The city is hosting a variety of other events for the holidays, as part of its Christmas in the City festivities.
