Two men died late Saturday night after losing control of their vehicle on U.S. Route 129, better known as the Dragon.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, 23-year-old Kyle Moroney and 19-year-old Tanner Umphrey were driving north on the road near the North Carolina state line before losing control. The driver overcorrected and hit a tree before rolling 100 feet down an embankment.
Both lost their lives in the crash.
THP said the two were driving in a 2009 Nissan 370Z. Both were wearing their seat belts and were not driving under the influence.
The victims' families have been notified.
Friends and local car enthusiasts gathered to remember Moroney and Umphrey during a memorial Sunday night.
According to friends, Moroney was active in the Knoxville Car Enthusiasts group.
The group says the deaths made ripples throughout the car community and impacted them all greatly.
"At this point I still don't accept it, but I'm getting there slowly," said friend Elijah Delozier. "With the car scene being the way it is, when one goes, it hurts just about as much as someone that's family. That's what we consider everyone that's in this, you know family."
The Knoxville Car Enthusiasts group is making decals to honor Moroney, with proceeds going to his family.
