Vols head coach Jeremy Pruitt 'starting to like this team'

If you thought coach Pruitt was the type of coach to have practice indoors when the weather conditions are less than desirable, think again.

Tennessee football remained outside to wrap up its first week of spring practice despite the cold and rainy weather conditions.

While the team has a lot to work on, Coach Pruitt is getting to know the players and likes what he sees.

"I'm starting to like this team, being around these guys because I sense a lot of guys who are hungry and maybe have a chip on their shoulder," said Pruitt. "Not all of them, but maybe enough of them have it and maybe we can make it where it's contagious."

Pruitt has been working with the defensive backs including former wide receiver Tyler Byrd and running back Carlin Fils-aime. After a few practices, Pruitt believes both players have the ability to contribute in the defensive backfield.

"I think just being around them, they are both good competitors. They have toughness, but there's things about defensive backs that make ti a learned behavior. They've got to kind of learn the movements and the skill set, but I think both of them have the skills set to contribute back there."

After a couple practices, the coaches determined safety would be the best spot for Byrd.

Byrd and Fils-amie are among several players that are switching positions. Pruitt confirmed defensive ends Darrell Taylor and Deandre Johnson will now play outside linebacker, which makes sense In Pruitt's 3-4 defense where your outside backers are your pass rushers and your d-lineman are generally bigger.

The first-year head coach also touched on his vision for Tennessee's annual Orange and White Game. Pruitt wants to divide the team up and play and actual game, complete with a Vol Walk and possibly stay in a hotel the night before.

Tennessee's spring game is set for April 21 at 2 p.m.
