High school basketball teams headed to state

The Oakdale Eagles are headed to the state tournament for the first time in school history. Oakdale beat Sullivan North 77-52 in a Class 1A Sectional game. Eagles fans packed the gym at Roane State to see Oakdale make history.

"My first year we won one basketball game," said Travis Nelson, now in his sixth season as Oakdale's head coach. "To go from one basketball game to getting to this point, it means so much to me, it means a lot to our school. This community has really been behind these guys, so to see that and see all these people out (at the game), I didn't know there was this many people in Oakdale. To see that many people means a lot to me and our program.

ALCOA BEATS GRAINGER TO EARN TRIP TO MURFREESBORO

Grainger's gym was packed full of fans hoping to see the Grizzlies earn their first trip to state but Alcoa had other ideas, taking the game 72-64 behind 17 points from Donte Harris.

The Tornadoes jumped around in pure joy in the locker room after the win. They're going to state for the first time since 2012.

JODY WRIGHT EARNS WIN NUMBER 700

Fulton head coach Jody Wright picked up career win number 700 as Fulton beat Unicoi County 90-57 to earn a trip to the Class AA State Tournament for the third time in the last four seasons.

POWELL CLINCHES FIRST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH SINCE 2007

The Panthers beat Science Hill 58-48 to earn a trip to Murfreesboro.

BEARDEN RETURNS TO MURFREESBORO

After losing in the state quarterfinal last season, the Bearden Bulldogs made it their goal to return to the 'Boro and they will do just that, with a 37-1 record.
