RIO DE JANEIRO -- Rio 2016 Organizing Committee spokesman Mario Andrada said visitors were stuck in line for hours Saturday morning at several events, including venues at the main Olympic Park.

Andrada said they were working to speed up the screening of fans as they go through security checkpoints.

Saturday is the first full day of competition.

“We apologize to everyone who’s standing in the sun in line outside the venues,” Andrada said. “We obviously need to upgrade that part of the game.”

Andrada said the problem is not in the equipment but coordinating between federal police officers, military and Olympic officials. He said that led to delays of up to 90 minutes in some lines at Olympic Park.

“Each of these groups of people have different processes and people they report to,” he said. “There was a problem with integration. We do hope that nobody missed an important part of the competition. We need to fix this within the next couple of hours.”
