Wednesday was a historic day for a local swimmer hoping to qualify for the Olympics in Rio this summer.

Caeleb Dressel, who is a Clay High School grad, broke some big time records in Columbia, Missouri.

Dressel is competing at the SEC Swimming and Diving championships, where he swam the fastest 50-yard freestyle in history, breaking the NCAA, American and U.S. Open records.

Dressel swam the race in 18.39 seconds in prelims, according to SwimSwam.com. Then he bested that time with 18.23 later Wednesday evening.

Two years ago, Dressel became the first junior swimmer to race under 19 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle.

Last season, he broke his own National Age Group Record with 18.67 seconds.
