KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Department of Transportation is giving motorists a heads up about road work on Interstate 40 that will cause delays for upcoming weekends.
Construction started Friday, March 2 at 8 p.m. Road crews will be repairing bridges that stretch five miles on both sides of I-40 between the West Hills exit and the I-640 interchange.
TDOT said the work will reduce traffic for both the eastbound and westbound sides of the interstate to two lanes each weekend as they do the repair work between Fridays at 8 p.m. to Mondays at 6 a.m. The work occurs on weekends starting March 2 and is scheduled to wrap up the weekend of April 14-15.
Work will not happen on Easter weekend between March 30 and April 2. TDOT said the schedule could change depending on local weather conditions.
Motorists are asked to use extreme caution when driving through this stretch of I-40 and may want to consider alternate routes on the weekend.
The work is happening alongside other road work in Cocke County.
