Tenn. firefighter dies battling overnight house fire

A Memphis firefighter died battling a house fire that started late Saturday night.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis firefighter died battling a house fire that started late Saturday night.

The fire, located in the 4500 block of Marigold Lane, reportedly began at 11:30 p.m. and was caused by a malfunctioning portable fan.

THV11 affiliate WREG reported that Lt. Rodney Eddins, 57, was trying to contain the fire when he collapsed. He was then taken to a hospital in critical condition, where he died shortly after.

Eddins had reportedly been with Memphis Fire for 30 years.

The cause of death is still under investigation.
