Daily News cover slams retiring Post editor as Trump 'toady'

The New York Daily News did not have many kind words for retiring New York Post's editor in chief Col Allan.

The New York Daily News did not have many kind words for retiring New York Post's editor in chief Col Allan.

"TA-TA TO TRUMP'S TABLOID TOADY" screams the Daily News cover about the announcement. Allan is retiring at the end of the month after more than a decade at the helm of the Post and 42 years overall at News Corp., which owns the paper.

The Daily News derides its competitor's outgoing chief as a waterboy for Trump because on at least one occasion he was spotted wearing a "Make America Great Again" hat in the Post's newsroom.

"The belligerent boss was known for his explosive outbursts and profanity-spewing rants," the Daily News piece says. "His front pages always skewed in favor of owner Rupert Murdoch’s far-right politics — and recently carried water for GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump."

"Allan didn’t hide his own political preferences either — proudly wearing a hat with Trump’s campaign slogan on it," the article says.

Post spokesman Steven Rubenstein told The New York Times that someone else brought the cap into the office and that Allan only wore it for a matter of minutes.

The Daily News also referenced rumors it says were sparked by Allan's "outsized appreciation for the blowhard billionaire" that he intends to go on to work for the Trump campaign. Allan dismissed the rumors as untrue.

The Daily News also quotes unnamed Post employees it claims were thrilled at the announcement of Allan's retirement.

“The door can’t hit his butt fast enough and I know many of my colleagues feel the same way,” one of the anonymous employees is quoted as saying.

At least one of Allan's co-workers has gone on record with praise for him.

“Col Allan is one of the most outstanding editors of his generation,” News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch told the Post. “Col’s intelligence, insight, humor and unrelenting energy has created the New York Post that today stands as a newspaper of great influence, in print and online.”
