Rep. Steve Cohen, other Democrats to file articles of impeachment against President Trump

Cohen said that Trump's actions have become 'a danger to democracy.'

A group of House Democrats led by Rep. Steve Cohen of Memphis will file articles of impeachment Wednesday against President Donald Trump, warning that his actions have become “a danger to democracy.”

“The time has come to make clear to the American people and to this president that his train of injuries to our Constitution must be brought to an end through impeachment,” said Cohen, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice.

Cohen said there is evidence that Trump attempted to obstruct an investigation into Russia’s interference in last year’s presidential election, most notably through his firing of FBI Director James Comey.

Trump’s refusal to separate himself from his business has led to clear conflicts of interest that appear to violate the Constitution’s domestic and foreign emoulments clauses barring officeholders from accepting gifts or titles from foreign governments without the consent of Congress, Cohen said.

“And his attacks on ‘so-called’ judges and ‘fake news’ have undermined public confidence in the judiciary and the press,” Cohen said.

“It’s time for Congress to take action to stop this reckless and harmful behavior by removing Mr. Trump from office and to defend and uphold the Constitution of the United States,” Cohen said.

The formal charges against Trump are outlined in five articles of impeachment. They are unlikely to gain much traction in the Republican-controlled Congress.

The charges mark the second time Democrats have offered impeachment articles against Trump in the past month.

Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, introduced articles of impeachment in October. He later withdrew the resolution but promised to bring it back at a later date. He is one of the six sponsors of the articles to be filed Wednesday.
