Police: Explosion at refinery injures one in Texas

PASADENA, Texas — One person was injured Saturday in an explosion at a Texas oil refinery, police say.

Authorities said a generator exploded inside the Pasadena Refining System Inc. refinery in Pasadena, near Houston.

Officials at the facility are doing a head count, Pasadena police spokesman Vance Mitchell said. Mitchell did not know the extent of the person’s injuries.

Officials say the person injured was transported to Bayshore Medical Center in Pasadena.

Mitchell said a plume of blue and black smoke could be seen rising from the refinery Saturday, but no evacuation was ordered.

Plant officials told authorities there was no danger to the public and no chemicals were released.

Refinery spokesman Sebastian Passadore did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

In September 2011, there was a brief fire with no injuries in a distillation section of the plant, which can refine 100,000 barrels of crude oil per day into products like gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. Three months later, two people were injured in explosions when sludge at the bottom of a tank ignited, unleashing a fireball.
