Are you a high school football coach? Are you the family breadwinner? Consider this unsolicited advice: Get thee to the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex stat!
As reported by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the average football head coach’s salary at the Fort Worth area’s biggest high schools was $98,041, with a whopping 34 coaches earning a six figure salary. That’s a significant increase over the Houston area, where just 15 football coaches topped the $100,000 mark.
The highest paid coach in the Fort Worth area is Arlington Martin’s Bob Wager and Arlington Sam Houston’s Anthony Criss, who each earn $113,533 in annual salary. That’s one segment where the Houston area has an edge, with Katy head coach Gary Joseph earning more than $130,000 annually.
As with the Houston coach compensation study, the most critical takeaway is that football coaches in the Metroplex earn far more than their teaching colleagues on high school campuses. By comparison, the average starting teacher’s salary in the Fort Worth area is $52,482. To put the football excess in Texas in perspective, the state of South Carolina has just four pure coaches who earn more than $100,000; there are four other football coaches who also top $100,000 in salary, but they also serve as athletic directors at their respective institutions.
