Widespread flooding causing traffic issues across East TN, Southern KY

13 counties in East Tennessee, Southern Kentucky and Virginia are under a Flood Warning as of 3 p.m. Sunday as rain continues to pour this weekend.

13 counties in East Tennessee, Southern Kentucky and Virginia are under a Flood Warning as heavy rain continues to pour in the area.

A State of Emergency has been declared in Harlan County, Kentucky due to the widespread flooding. Harlan County Judge-Executive Dan Mosley asked for those in this area to not risk their lives and to seek higher ground if their home is in a flood prone area.

Claiborne County Mayor Jack Daniels announced the county is in a state of emergency due to the numerous reports of dangerous flooding on roadways in the area.

Dispatch at Knox County, Kentucky said authorities are keeping an eye on the rising waters of Stinking Creek as it has already caused some closures on a few roads in that area.

McCreary County Dispatch said Highway 1363 and West 92 are both closed due to rising flood waters. Dispatch said signs are up to warn drivers not to drive through those areas.

In Southern Virginia, Wise County Sheriff's Office had to help a driver who attempted to drive through a flooded road.

The National Weather Service of Morristown reminded folks that if they do encounter a flooded roadway to turn around, don't drown.

Anderson County dispatchers said Airport Road near Smith Road is closed in Oliver Springs due to the rising flood waters. Anderson County Sheriff's Office is warning drivers not to drive through flooded waters.

Dispatchers in McMinn County asks for drivers on Highway 307 to be careful as there is standing water on the roadway. However, the road is not closed at this time. Authorities are monitoring rising water levels.

Dispatchers in Roane County said Myrtle Ward Road is closed as of 11 p.m. Saturday due to the rising waters on that roadway.

Rhea County dispatchers said Front Street, Highway 30, and Highway 302 are all dealing with rising waters on roadways in those areas.

Hawkins County dispatchers said Rogersville is seeing some severe impacts from the flooding. South Church Street in Rogersville is now closed due to the rising waters.

The National Weather Service has tips for those who may be dealing with rising waters around their home or on roadways they are traveling:

  • Stay informed
  • Get to higher ground
  • Obey evacuation orders
  • Practice electrical safety
  • Avoid flood waters
