VFL and Pilot founder Jim Haslam receives 2018 Pat Summitt Award

The award is given to the person who best exemplifies the outstanding character of legendary Lady Vols coach Pat Summitt for integrity, high standards and hard work.

The founder of the Pilot Corporation will receive a rare honor at the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet next June.

Jim Haslam (not to be confused with his son Jimmy Haslam, the current CEO of Pilot Flying J), has been named the recipient of the 2018 Pat Summitt Lifetime Achievement Award. Haslam will receive the award on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at the 52nd Annual Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet in Nashville.

The award is given to the person who best exemplifies the outstanding character of legendary Lady Vols coach Pat Summitt for integrity, high standards and hard work.

Former Texas Longhorns football coach Mack Brown and former SEC commissioner Roy Kramer received the award in the past.

Haslam is best known for starting the Pilot Corporation in 1958, which grew from a single gas station to a network of more than 650 travel centers across the nation. Before being commissioned in the Army Corps of Engineers, Haslam played for the Vols as starting tackle and claimed a national championship in 1951. In 1952, Haslam was named team captain.
