Veterans seek help after American Legion post floods

Members of an American Legion post in Kingston are hoping the public will help after its headquarters suffered heavy flooding.

The Kingston American Legion post is seeking the public's help after its building suffered heavy flooding this week.

"Just to see what we have in shambles -- it was disheartening," said Sam Cox of Post 110.

A city drain apparently became stopped up, prompting water to come into the post's Race Street building. It was discovered Tuesday.

Standing water several feet deep accumulated in the lower level, ruining couches, other furniture and appliances among other things, according to member Nathan Hickey.

Area veterans use it as a gathering place.

Cox said he's hoping volunteers will come out noon to 4 p.m. Saturday to help as they try to remove all the damaged items in the building and begin the cleanup process.

"We are going to have to rely on our community and our surrounding area to pull together," he told 10News.

Damage is so extensive that wall paneling will likely have to be removed.

"We're going to have to start from scratch," Cox said.

Water was so intrusive that it actually moved some appliances, members said.
