Veterans in Northeast Tennessee presented with tank at ceremony in Newport

"This ceremony is an opportunity for us to thank these brave individuals and their families for their service and sacrifice. The monuments we will display will serve as a daily reminder to us that our freedom and way of life would not be possible without their courageous efforts."

Lawmakers and other state leaders honored Northeast Tennesseans who have served for our country on Monday.

The ceremony was held at the Newport National Guard Armory Monday afternoon.

A tank was placed on display and new military flags were raised to serve as reminders of the sacrifices made by the region's brave servicemen and women.

State Representative Jeremy Faison, Maj. General Max Haston, Adjutant General of the Tennessee National Guard, and retired veteran Sherrell Shults attended the ceremony.

"We are fortunate in our community to have so many valiant men and women who have chosen to defend our flag and our freedom," Faison said.

The President of the Veterans Old Timers Group Sherrell Shults hopes the tank will honor veterans across the state.

"It symbolizes our thoughts and our ambitions to be involved in the military somehow or another," Schults said.

Shults and the Veterans Old Timers Group hope to turn the monument into a park in the coming year.
