UTPD warns of car thefts on campus

Officers say stolen property is one of the biggest problems and most common reported crimes.

KNOXVILLE — As students head back to campus, the University of Tennessee Police Department is warning against car thefts. Officers say stolen property is one of the biggest problems and most common reported crimes.

"Secure your property," said Sgt. Lindsey Miller with UTPD. "Put it in your trunk or hide it away where people can’t tell what’s in your car."

As students move in on campus, thieves are on the watch for distracted parents and students who leave their cars unlocked and unattended. Police are warning it only takes second for thieves to look through your window and steal your stuff.

"When you look at how long does it take to open or break a window, or to reach in and grab. It’s just a snatch and grab. Very quick," said Lt. Mike Richardson.

The University of Tennessee Police Department says theft on campus is one of the most common crimes.

In the past 60 days, there have been 22 reported thefts reported from cars. Officers say you should lock your doors, close your windows and not leave valuables in plain sight.

"A lot of people think, well, I’m just going to take a second, I won’t be gone for but a minute and then we get somewhere and start unpacking and it’s two hours later and the trunk is still open or the vehicle is still unlocked," said Sgt. Miller. "We want to make sure everyone understands that even if you’re going to be gone for just a couple of minutes to go ahead and secure that vehicle."

To combat the problem, UTPD began what they call Operation ID. Students can register their valuables so police can track them down in case they are ever stolen.

Ultimately, UTPD Officers say they rely on tips from people to catch thieves.

They want everyone to know, if you see something, say something.
