The statistics behind another big shopping day, the day after Christmas

Consumers will return about $90 billion worth of items this holiday season according to Optoro, a firm that specializes in the business of return shipments.

As expected, the day after Christmas brings quite the crowd to the West Town Mall in Knoxville.

"It's a great day, great deals. Not too crowded. Lines aren't too bad," said Cherrie Morgan who had to make some returns.

It's not only a big day for returning items but for shopping in general, and people decide to spend money on themselves.

"No exchanges, I just wanted to see if we could find some good sales," Donna Bauman, who was shopping with her mother, said.

According to Optoro, a reverse logistics company, 91 percent of returns happen in store and 57 percent of shoppers make an additional purchase at the same store. About 30 percent of shoppers redeem a gift card after returning an item.

Statistics show 45 percent of consumers will return unwanted holiday gifts after Christmas. Most of those returns happen between Dec. 26 and Dec. 31 so if you want to avoid big crowds then come New Year's Day.
