Snow causes slick roads in parts of East Tennessee on New Year's Eve

Some roads will be slick this evening, so be careful and plan ahead while traveling on New Year's Eve.

Unexpected snowfall in East Tennessee has caused some slick road conditions for many traveling on New Year's Eve.

Cocke, Sevier, Blount and Greene counties have seen much more of the unexpected snowfall than the rest of East Tennessee.

As cars drive over the snow that has accumulated on the roadways, it thaws out, causing ice to develop in some areas.

A few roads in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park have closed due to snow and ice.

  • Wears Cove Road is temporarily closed at the park boundary
  • Gatlinburg Bypass is temporarily closed
  • Little River Road from the Sugarlands Visitors Center to the Townsend Wye is temporarily closed
  • Laurel Creek Road is temporarily closed at the Townsend Wye
  • US Highway 441/Newfound Gap Road from Gatlinburg, Tenn. to Cherokee, North Carolina is temporarily closed
  • Foothills Parkway East is temporarily closed

Sevier County

  • US Highway 441 is currently seeing traffic congestion as many travel to Gatlinburg for New Year's Eve as well as driving carefully on the slick roads

Cocke County

  • US Highway 411/Newport Highway is moving slowly due to slick road conditions and car accidents. Tennessee Department of Transportation is working to treat the roads and help folks get home safety as of 11:00 p.m.

Anyone traveling on Interstate 40-E to Asheville, North Carolina should be very wary as road conditions across the state line become treacherous. Both Interstate 40 and Interstate 26 near Asheville have very slick roads as of 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation's spokesperson Mark Nagi says TDOT is currently treating roads in Cocke, Jefferson and Sevier counties.
