Search scaled back for missing Morgan County man

After four days of searching, rescue squads will discontinue searching for Kevin Hamby while the Morgan County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate his disappearance as a missing persons case.

Four days after a Morgan County man disappeared riding an all-terrain vehicle, rescue crews are calling of the search while the Morgan County Sheriff's Office continues a missing person investigation.

Family says 38-year-old Kevin Hamby was last seen Tuesday evening when he left his home for a short ride on his Polaris RZR side-by-side.

A tracking dog followed Hamby's scent from his home for about five miles, but the leaders say the trail went cold.

"It seemed like it vanished - the scent," Hamby's father Reuben Hamby said. "That's as far as we got and it's as far as we're going to get I guess."

Morgan County Rescue Squad began searching Tuesday night. By Thursday, the Tennessee Highway Patrol flew in helicopters to assist through the air.

Saturday over a half dozen rescue squads answered Morgan County's call to assist in the search. Morgan County Rescue Squad Chief Neil Noe said the crews had searched a radius around eight miles from Hamby's house.

Though crews found no trace of Hamby or his side-by-side, Sheriff Glen Freytag says there is no evidence of suspicious activity at this point in the investigation.

Hamby had a lengthy medical history.

His father says Hamby had 13 surgeries on his hip. With the help of a medical malpractice lawyer, Hamby received large settlement after surgeons used recalled parts in a hip replacement, his says.

Hamby's father says Kevin used that money to pay off his father's mortgage, buy him a new truck and a tractor, plus cars for his teenage stepsons.

Reuben Hamby says he had previously gone into debt paying for Kevin's medical expenses.

"He replaced everything that I got rid of to help him out," Reuben Hamby said.

The Polaris RZR was Hamby's newest passion. His hip problems prevented him from doing many activities, but riding his side-by-side was something he could still enjoy.

"He was in so much pain, something like that took his mind off of it," Reuben Hamby said.

Hamby's father says his family is struggling to handle the situation.

"It's been rough. I think the way things are going it's going to get a lot rougher because we haven't found him. Haven't found a trace. Nothing. But I hope it works out alright."

Anyone with information on Hamby's disappearance is asked to call the Morgan County Sheriff's Office at (423) 346-6262.
