Remote Area Medical collecting food donations for South Dakota Native Americans

"The weather this time of year is really brutal. Very, very high unemployment. More than 50% of the people are unemployed, and they're hungry."

Remote Area Medical is asking for the public's help to donate food for Native American people living on reservations in South Dakota.

RAM is hoping to fill a tractor trailer with food to drive to the Pine Ridge, Rosebud, and Cheyenne River Sioux Reservations in South Dakota.

"The weather this time of year is really brutal," Stan Brock, the Founder and President of RAM, said. "Very, very high unemployment. More than 50% of the people are unemployed, and they're hungry."

RAM is asking that people donate canned food and other non-perishable food items throughout the next couple of weeks. They are hoping to leave for South Dakota in the first couple weeks of January.

"We've sent close to 100,000 pounds of relief supplies to Puerto Rico during this very, very difficult time with all of these hurricanes," Brock said. "So now, I think it's time we look at the poor folks up there at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation."

RAM has previously held medical clinics on the reservations in South Dakota but is now focusing its efforts on providing food for the hungry there.

If you want to donate, Brock will be at RAM Headquarters in Rockford, Tenn. all throughout the holidays.

The address to drop off donations is 2200 Stock Creek Boulevard, Rockford, Tenn. 37853.
