RAM accepting 500 patients in Knoxville Friday for free medical clinic

2,500 people are expected to come to the clinic over the next couple of days.

Remote Area Medical in Knoxville is spreading the word that it's offering free medical, dental and vision clinical care to 500 more patients Friday.

RAM said it still had about 250 tickets of the 500 available Friday for people wanting to take advantage of their services.

The event runs through Feb. 4 each day starting at 6 a.m. at Chilhowee Park's Jacob Buidling on 3301 East Magnolia Avenue in Knoxville.

RAM's 900th clinic attracted around 210 people on the first day, but it expects to serve at least 2,000 -2,500 people by the end

Hundreds of people lined up overnight the first night to get the medical care they desperately needed.

"It's too expensive to go anywhere else," said Kristy Robertson who waited in line starting at 7:30 Tuesday night for the doors to the Remote Area Medical clinic to open at 6 a.m. Wednesday.

"With minimum wage being what it is and with what people make day to day working, you can't afford to pay any extras," she said.

The first day of RAM's 900th medical clinic at Chilhowee Park on Jan. 31, 2018.

"It's a heartwarming feeling. You don't see this much. Not anymore, not today," said Katelyn Luthe, a 19-year-old who slept in her car overnight with the hope of getting new glasses so she could see clearly.

"You put on your old pair of glasses and you're like 'wow, alright.' Then you put on your new pair and it's an explosion of colors and definition and it's absolutely wonderful," she said.

RAM has helped more than 740,000 people around the world over the past 34 years, but for their 900th clinic, they chose to come home to Knoxville.

They will offer free dental, vision and medical treatment for anyone who needs it until Sunday.

Whether it be a new pair of glasses or an old tooth pulled, every treatment changes lives.

"There's no more hole," said Robertson, who had come to get a cavity filled. "Now I don't have to be afraid to smile."
