59 high schools from across Tennessee participated in the Tennessee Science Bowl Saturday to put their science skills to the test.

The bowl is the nation's third largest regional competition and was held at Pellissippi State Community College's Blount County campus. The regional bowl prepares students to compete nationally with other students from across the U.S.

Oak Ridge High School placed first in the annual event and will have an all-expenses paid trip to the Department of Energy National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. along with a first place trophy and $1,000 in cash. The national bowl will run from April 26 to April 30.

Other trophies and cash prizes were given out to other high school teams who did exceptionally well in the Tennessee Science Bowl.

Signal Mountain High School took second place and received $750 in prize money.

White Station High School took home third place and received $500.

Cookeville High School took home fourth place and received $250 in prize money.

"For these students, whether competing ni the the Tennessee Science Bowl or nationally in DOE'S National Science Bowl, it is not just about winning," DOE Oak Ridge National Laboratory Site Office Manager Johnny Moore said in a statement. "These teams are demonstrating that their passion for their sciences is a commitment, and their dreams of future careers in science will soon be realized. In fact, many of these students will go on to become our country's science and technology leaders, and that's something DOE strongly believes is worth investing in."
