New sensors track parking availability in Market Square Garage

The city of Knoxville added parking sensors in the Market Square Garage to help people searching for empty spaces.

The anxiety of finding a parking space in the Market Square Garage may be behind you.

The city of Knoxville has partnered with Parking Logix to add parking sensors that will help drivers tell if there are any available parking spaces before they enter the garage. The sensors will count the vehicles as they enter and leave the garage. The sensors are 99.5 percent accurate.

Almost 8,000 cars enter the city-owned downtown garages everyday, according to the city. At some point in the future, Parking Logix plans to create a way to check the available spaces from your smartphone before you leave the house.

If successful, the city of Knoxville will extend the sensors to the parking garages on Locust Street and State Street garages.
