Charles the Monarch released to owner

Old Dominion University's top dog is now behind bars.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Daniel Painter, the owner of Old Dominion University's top dog, was sentenced in court Friday to sixty days in jail and a $2,500 fine, both suspended, officials say.

Charles the Monarch, a Labradoodle whose fur coat is trimmed to resemble ODU's mascot Big Blue, was found out and about on March 30, 2016. Norfolk Animal Control picked up the unattended dog for nuisance.

The "lion dog" was held at the Friends of Norfolk Animal Care Center and was released to his owner Friday morning.

This incident on March 30 wasn't the first time the popular pooch has garnered unwanted attention. In 2013, several 911 calls warned of a "baby lion" strolling down the streets of Norfolk, hunting for its next meal.

Overall, this marks the fourth time Charles has been impounded since 2010.

The six-month jail sentence and $2,500 fine were both suspended on the condition that Painter and Charles be on good behavior for six months. Painter must build a six-foot electrical fence around his yard and pay all boarding fees and expenses before Charles is released. Also, Charles must not leave the property without being on a leash.

Charles has a Facebook fan page that describes him as "just your everyday party animal," and even has his own children's book published.
