A former Knox County Chaplain of more than 16 years has passed away.

Reverend Gale Lyon died on Friday, Nov. 3. The Knox County Sheriff's Office sent out its condolences to the Lyon family Monday.

He was Co-Coordinator of Chaplains for the Knox County Sheriff’s Office from 1994 until his retirement in 2010. According to the sheriff's office, he was awarded the honor of Chaplain of the Year by the National Sheriff’s Association in 2005.

"He loved police officers, his fellow chaplains, and especially the men and women of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. Two of his sons and a granddaughter served as officers with the KCSO," the post from the sheriff's office read.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shepherd of the Hills Baptist Church.
