Greene County Fairgrounds put up for sale, searching for larger location

The project will take years to complete as brokers search for a buyer on the 68-year-old site of the Greene County Fair.

After 68 years in the same location, the board of directors for the Greene County Fair have voted to find a new location.

A report from SVN Interstate Brokers of Georgia issued Monday said the undertaking of finding new fairgrounds in the county will be a multiyear process. Lead broker John Johnson said in the statement that they have to find a buyer for the 182-acre property that would be willing to delay any redevelopment until the new fairgrounds in constructed.

“This will be a multiyear project. Not only will we need to find a suitable new location for the Greene County Fair, but we will also have to find a buyer for the property who will be willing to delay any redevelopment until the fair has constructed new facilities and moved,” lead broker John Johnson said.

Fair president Jeff Clark says the board recognized that developmental property in Greeneville is at a premium and the move provides growth and expansion possibilities. Greeneville Mayor W.T. Daniels noted in the report that $10 million in improvements along Jeff Woods Memorial Drive near the grounds provides access for new development.

He added that plans for the new location would include several upgrades.

“As the fair continues to grow, we would especially like to have additional land to expand the Jim Saulsbury Motorsports Arena, enhance our facilities and provide additional parking for our patrons,” Clark said.

Johnson estimates the process of selling the fairgrounds could be a five- to seven-year project.
