Essential salute to super workers at supermarkets

We salute all the essential workers who continue to provide us with the goods and services we need, including the unsung heroes at the grocery store.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Grocery stores across the country have made drastic adjustments to cope with the coronavirus.  In Knoxville, the essential workers at Kroger are adjusting to expressions of appreciation for doing a normally thankless job.

"It's not often that we are thanked [in normal circumstances], but we have had so many customers thank us," said Kendra Hutzler, manager of Kroger at Knox Plaza.  "Our customers have thanked us multiple times for being here. And that has been honestly one of the shining moments for me during all of this."

Hutzler has worked for Kroger around 10 years and just took the position as store manager at Knox Plaza seven weeks ago.  What a time to take a new job, just before COVID-19 sent a rush of customers stocking up on supplies and CDC guidelines changed how they operate.

"It has given me the opportunity to get to know everybody here, but six feet away. We are essential. People have to have food. You've got to have medicines and different things from our pharmacy," said Hutzler.

The essential employees at grocery stores are exposed to large crowds in a setting where it is nearly impossible to maintain a safe social distance at all times.  Hutzler said the employees have not only continued to volunteer for shifts, they generally do it with a smile.

"It has been unlike anything I've experienced. The attitude has actually been really good.  In a situation where you think people would be more anxious or nervous, they've really jumped in and want to know, 'Where can I help?' That is really the overall feeling I have had. The teamwork and asking, 'Where can I help and be useful in this time?' stand out," said Hutzler

Hutzler said the employees receive a hero bonus that adds $2 per hour to their normal pay.  But the greatest reward has been the recognition and appreciation from the people they serve.

"It's a difficult time and it's good to be recognized for the efforts that we've been doing.  We're just really proud of our associates and it's something I'll remember for the rest of my career, how everybody came together," said Hutzler.
