Knox Co. Commission approves $5 million renovation for Inskip Elementary

The plans for the school include 11 new classrooms, a new library and cafeteria along with improved play areas.

County leaders approved more than $5 million for renovations at Inskip Elementary Monday night, taking a big step toward getting permanent classrooms for a school working out of portable buildings.

The Knox County Commission approved the funding during its meeting Monday night.

The plans for the school include 11 new classrooms, a new library and cafeteria along with improved play areas.

About 11,000 square feet of portable classrooms will be removed once the new ones are complete.

"Portable buildings, those are always set up to be temporary and temporary ends up becoming permanent because of lack of funds. It's great to know they're going to be able to transition out of these portable buildings," 2nd District Commissioner Michele Carringer said.

Inksip is one of several schools in Knox County that has seen enrollment growth.
