East Tennessee father and son spend fall break hiking Mount Kilimanjaro

A local father and son didn't spend fall break at the beach or relaxing at home. Rob and Morgan Bate climbed one of the world's tallest mountains. The two say it was worth every step to get to the top.

For most families, fall break means taking it easy. But for the Bate family, it meant a once in a lifetime trip to Africa to face one of the tallest mountains on earth.

At 16,100 feet, Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano in Tanzania. Rob Bate and his teenaged son Morgan traveled to the country to attempt the climb. The two discussed the trip and experience with Russell and Beth.

The two didn't know it but they each had told their wife/mother that they wouldn't attempt the climb alone. They had to try it together.

The father and son said the climb wasn't easy but it strengthened their already strong father-son bond and said it was one of the most rewarding experiences of their lives. They're glad they made the hike, together.
