Dollar General scraps plans for Happy Holler store

A new development group plans to buy the property at 2209 N. Central St., and salvage and renovate the building.

Dollar General will not move forward with plans to build a store in the Happy Holler neighborhood, and a new development group has stepped in to buy the property.

Dollar General intended to open a store on North Central Street on the site of the former Charlies' Pie Shop property, which also used to house a Habitat for Humanity thrift store. The plans were met with opposition from neighbors and area business owners who said the chain store would harm local businesses and alter a historic building.

A spokesperson for Dollar General said Friday the company has decided not to pursue the Central Street store.

"As part of our due diligence process, we made the decision to not move forward with a proposed project on Central Avenue in Knoxville. We plan to continue to review and evaluate locations we may consider for store locations that best fit our customers’ needs for value and convenience," Crystal Ghassemi, director of public relations for Dollar General, wrote in an email to 10News.

Joe Fox with Fox and Fogerty, Realty Executives Associates told 10News on Friday that his development group is going to buy the property at 2209 N. Central St., and salvage and renovate the building. Fox said they plan to find a new tenant for the building.
