KFD: Crews extinguish large fire at recycling facility

The same building previously caught fire in 2019, causing evacuations for nearby homes and businesses.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Knoxville Fire Department said crews responded to a large fire at the Fort Loudon Waste and Recycling building Thursday night into Friday morning.

The building is located on Hancock Street in North Knoxville.

Three master streams were set up to allow a flow of water into the building and two additional companies were called in to assist, according to KFD.

The department said they also called in its rehab bus because of the size of the fire and a hazardous material company as a precaution to perform air monitoring, KFD said. No hazardous substances were found.

No injuries have been reported and the bulk of the fire was knocked down early Friday morning, according to KFD.

Investigators are on the scene working to determine a cause and ask those with information regarding the fire to call the KFD Arson Hotline at 865-637-1386 or the Tennessee Arson Hotline at 1-800-762-3017.

This isn't the first time the recycling facility has gone up in flames. In 2019, businesses and homes were evacuated as crews worked to put out the fire. A 10News investigation discovered the site owed more than $350,000 in city and county taxes at the time.
