"It's like a sacred ground, it's hallowed," Mark Parrott, a caretaker with Mountain Home National Cemetery in Johnson City, said. "This should be respected. No one's head stone should be laying flat. No one's headstone should be marked up."

Around 30 people came out to rake leaves, pick up the headstones that had been toppled over. Executive Director of Old Gray Cemetery Ruthie Kuhlman said it's important for this restoration as it will help with preserving the cemetery's beauty.

"We are going to bring this back to its beauty that it was," Kuhlman said. "We're going to redo the roads. We're going to put the fountain back that was originally there."

Kuhlman says law enforcement has also stepped up in patrolling the area to prevent vandalism of the historic area.
