Babies 'go red' for heart health month at Tennova

To celebrate heart health month, babies across East Tennessee got a special surprise Thursday morning.

February comes with a whole lot of hearts and the reminder to protect your own.

To celebrate heart health month, babies across East Tennessee got a special surprise Thursday morning.

Staff delivered dozens of tiny red hats to babies and new moms at Tennova. The hats were knit by volunteers as part of the Go Red For Women Campaign.

It aims to raise awareness for heart disease, which is the top killer of women.

Nearly 1 in 100 babies are born with some form of a heart defect.

"Luckily we're able to recognize a good number of them, if not all of them, while a woman's still pregnant with ultrasounds. And [we] can make arrangements to have the baby delivered. And in some cases, we can have babies transferred to Vanderbilt to have surgery right after they're born," Dr. Leonard Brabson, OB-GYN said.

National Go Red Day is Friday. Everyone is encouraged to wear to red to support the American Heart Association.
